While rock roll flamboyance stretched back at least as far as Little Richard, Freddie Mercury continued to camp it up, taking little seriously and smirking at the music's growing pretensions while partaking in them no small bit. Many of the band's singles hold up extremely well, such as "Killer Queen" and "You're My Best Friend". The quartet's canny sense of melody and sophisticated vocal harmonies--not to mention Mercury's raised eyebrow--have traveled well through the years. --Rickey Wright

Michael Card - Joy in the Journey: 10 Years of Greatest Hits
Michael Card - Joy in the Journey: 10 Years of Greatest Hits
Michael Card - Joy in the Journey: 10 Years of Greatest Hits Artist: Michael Card (Usually ships in 24 hours) THE REAL "SUMMER OF LOVE" MICHAEL CARD's Greatest Hits compilation was released in 1994 - one of the best years of my life. I recall hearing the song 'WHY?' for the first time in my (then) girlfriend's car, just as we were entering the eastbound I-10 onramp at Sepulveda Boulevard. Only a couple of months earlier, on April 6, while alone in an apartment in a grungy area of Los Angeles, I was quite unexpectedly driven to my knees, where Jesus Baptized me with The Holy Spirit. I didn't exactly know what had happened to me , or why - only that I was suddenly changed somehow. Obviously, that was a special year for this reviewer, and when I heard Michael Card sing, "WHY DID THEY NAIL HIS FEET AND HANDS WHEN HIS LOVE WOULD HAVE HELD HIM THERE?" it perfectly described the Fire I felt inside me, and the Love that I knew Jesus has for us! I asked my girlfriend to replay that song several times. For me, that remains one of the greatest lines ever written about my Savior King. And although I don't play it often, 'JOY IN THE JOURNEY' always takes me back to that magical year of rebirth.

Michael Card does not have a particularly great voice, but it adequately conveys the obviously heartfelt convictions of his nicely crafted Gospel songs. What makes Card special is his lyrics; he is Christian Rock's premier wordsmith, able to create songs around deep theological concepts. He overreaches at times ("...the universe fell from His Fingertips."; "...He sent His only Son and so became a Holy Embryo."), but that's the cost of creating fresh, unique expressions, and attempting to translate the Mystery into song. There may be an occasional misstep, but there's no doggerel verse here - just first class Christian poetry sung with sincerity, and sometimes backed by surprisingly powerful "electric" passion ('Known By The Scars', 'Scandalon', 'So Many Books', and my favorite track, 'Know You In The Now.') I'm rarely impressed by the lyrics of most songwriters, but consider these lines :

HE CANNOT LOVE MORE, AND WILL NOT LOVE LESS

WE IN OUR WEAKNESS BELIEVED WE WERE STRONG / HE BECAME HELPLESS TO SHOW WE WERE WRONG...
FOR THE POWER OF PARADOX OPENS YOUR EYES / AND BLINDS THOSE WHO SAY THEY CAN SEE

THAT IS THE MYSTERY, MORE THAN YOU CAN SEE / GIVE UP YOUR PONDERING AND FALL DOWN ON YOUR KNEES
NO FICTION AS FANTASTIC AND WILD / A MOTHER MADE BY HER OWN CHILD

TO HEAR WITH MY HEART, TO SEE WITH MY SOUL / TO BE GUIDED BY A HAND I CANNOT HOLD
TO TRUST IN A WAY THAT I CANNOT SEE / THAT'S WHAT FAITH MUST BE

THERE IS A JOY IN THE JOURNEY, THERE'S A LIGHT WE CAN LOVE ON THE WAY
THERE IS A WONDER AND WILDNESS TO LIFE, AND FREEDOM FOR THOSE WHO OBEY

TO BE SO COMPLETELY GUILTY, GIVEN OVER TO DESPAIR
TO LOOK INTO YOUR JUDGE'S FACE AND SEE A SAVIOR THERE

Now THAT'S what I call "writing!" Most of these tracks are enthusiastic and catchy. If they played this stuff on Christian radio I'd tune in once in awhile.

Michael Card's, 'JOY IN THE JOURNEY' puts joy in my journey, and it calls to mind my personal "Summer Of Love." And when this world douses my spirit, 'JOY IN THE JOURNEY' can fan my embers into a Divine Flame again. Brothers and Sisters, I think you'll like it too. Powerful Theological Truths in Music Form Music is powerful. The Bible makes this clear. Within the heart of man is a desire to release their emotions, affections, dreams, concerns, even theological truths in musical form. The Psalms (literally "praises") were written with all forms of human emotions but contained truths focused on God's Word (Psalm 119 is a prime example).

Today, however, it seems Christian music has lost its theological focus. Its now more bent on experience or a "personal relationship with Jesus." Songs taken from the Scriptures and the truth therein is found mainly in some praise worship artists and Michael Card. Card is a theologian who happens to play guitar. His love and passion for the Scriptures flows in his songs. From El Shaddai to The Final Word, Card takes deep theological truths and put them to music.

There is a silent revolution taking place in Christian music. The likes of Keith Green, Steve Camp, John Fisher, and Michael Card is not lost. God is reviving musicians who desire to glorify God alone! And I'm happy to endorse this album as an example of that revolution. Simply the Best! Michael Card is a pure muscial genius. What's better is he has decided to devote his gift to Christ. I have listened to practically all Christian artists and Michael Card is the King. Without any doubt. If you don't own this man's album, shame on you. Each of his songs are so deep, thoughtful, and annoited. My dad always says he could preach a sermon on each of Card's songs. I agree. His best includes: Scandalon, Starkindler, Known By the Scars, Know You in the Now, How Long, The Dragon, Into the Mystery, Celebrate the Child, The Final Word, God's Own Fool, Why?, Joy In the Journey, Salvation, Jubilee, You are Worthy, Soul Anchor, and many more. I can't say enough about this man and his music. BUY THIS CD!

Tim McGraw - Greatest Hits
Tim McGraw - Greatest Hits
Tim McGraw - Greatest Hits Artist: Tim McGraw (Usually ships in 24 hours) With a sad tenor that sounded like Mr. Haney from Green Acres, Tim McGraw, a freshman in country's crowded class of '92, seemed the least likely to graduate to superstardom. But eight years and 20 million albums and singles later, here he is with a greatest hits package so stuffed with songs--15 in all--that it doesn't have room for any new tunes, or even the best of all, "Everywhere." McGraw's appeal is two-fold: Aside from his unlistenable duets with wife Faith Hill and the abysmal "Indian Outlaw" that jump-started his career, he's had excellent taste in songs. And he's the epitome of the average guy in search of extraordinary love--the loser who becomes a winner. You see it all here, in the hate-it-but-love-it "Don't Take the Girl," the adrenaline rush of "Something Like That," and the infectious "I Like It, I Love It." If this album doesn't give hope to every karaoke singer in America, nothing will. --Alanna Nash new to country
I am an old rock and roller--never liked country music--I could not stand the sad songs and twang. However I saw Faith Hill on Oprah a few months ago promoting her Fireflies cd and was lost forever. I have since bought 21 cd's which are all by country artists. My favorite song on the cd was with a man I had never heard--Tim McGraw. I now own all his music, am a member of their fanclub, and have reservations for their next concert. Lost forever in country---------- A sound investment for any newcomer to country Don't jump to conclusions with the rating. I'm a huge Tim McGraw fan. "Indian Outlaw" is one of my all-time favorite songs by any artist in any genre. I have all of Tim's albums (except this one). Why would I buy his greatest hits album with no new material? If there had been one or two previously unreleased songs, I might have purchased this album just to complete my collection. I felt slightly put off when this album was released w/o any new songs. I felt like it was something the record company threw together just because it was time to release a hits album because that's the rules. I did, however, buy the Greatest Video Hits DVD.

This album is filled with great songs written by talented song writers. It has Tim's latest hits (as of 2000) and some of his early good'uns. If you're just getting into country music or Tim McGraw, this is the perfect starting point. But I think you'll become an instant fan and want all of his albums to hear all the incredible songs that didn't make it to the radio. Tim Mcgraw's done it again!!! This is Tim Mcgraw's best album! All of Tim's best songs put together makes this cd magnificent. "Something Like That" is a great song that is in the groove, while "Where the Green Grass Grows" is a song that has beautiful fiddles in it. "Maybe We Should Just Sleep On It" is another wonderful hit that anybody would love, even if your not a Tim Mcgraw fan. This Tim Mcgraw cd is definately worth ten stars! If your stuck on the decision whether or whether not to get it, you should buy it today. Ignore all those three star ratings, and buy this today. You won't regret it one bit!!!

Michael Bubl
Michael Bubl
Michael Bubl Artist: Michael Bubl (Usually ships in 24 hours) Click Here for more information Pop's rush to raid the cradle continues with this promising debut by 25-year-old Canadian singer Michael Bubl. And while the young vocal star's good looks are smart enough for a boy band, his muse seems to have sprung from a more sassy and compelling musical era. Mentored by Paul Anka (whose '50s hit "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" is covered in dreamy, cabaret fashion here), Bubl sings in the orbits of Darin and Sinatra, covering swing epoch gems ("Come Fly with Me," "The Way You Look Tonight," "That's All") and rock era standards (Van Morrison's "Moondance," "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" by the Brothers Gibb, Queen's "Crazy Little Ting Called Love") with equal aplomb. David Foster's production is typically slick and played to the back row of the bleachers, but it's informed by smart contexts provided by such arrangers as Johnny Mandel, Randy Waldman, and Mike Melvoin. If the choices of material are sometimes staid and predictable, they also give the singer a crucial framework for building toward something more challenging; his is a bright future. --Jerry McCulley A surprisingly good albumn I was familiar with Michael, but did not realize how much I really enjoyed his talent until purchasing this CD. He offers a unique perspective, style, and sound in today's pop music culture. Enjoyable I really enjoyed this CD. The music is well done, and Buble does a great job singing other people's songs. While I generally don't like remakes of songs (or movies, for that matter), I enjoyed listening to Buble's voice. The tunes are definitely catchy and I love his redition of "Sway".
I'd love to hear Buble sing something original, however. Pop Music at its Best For those who enjoy smooth, soulfully-delivered pop, this album is a superb choice. Simply stated, Michael Buble is the best artist in this genre since Frank Sinatra. Rod Stewart tries to do songs like these, with mixed results, but Buble succeeds on a consistent basis. Kudos to a fine artist.

Feels Like Home
Feels Like Home
Feels Like Home Artist: Norah Jones (Usually ships in 24 hours) Click Here for more information Norah Jones blew everybody away with her jazzy, country-tinged, Grammy-winning debut CD, Come Away with Me. On this recording, Jones doesn't mess with her trademark formula. Under Arif Mardin's cozy coproduction, Jones is supported by her writing partners, her Handsome Band, and some special guests (country legend Dolly Parton, Levon Helm and Garth Hudson of the Band, and jazz drummer Brian Blade, to name a few). Jones's Texas-twanged vocals and her sparse acoustic and electric Wurlitzer piano lines enliven the CD's 13 tracks, from the light and lively single "Sunrise" to Tom Waits's "The Long Way Home" and the bouncy duet with Parton, "Creepin' In." Jones's soul-baring piano/vocal rendition of Duke Ellington's "Melancholia," retitled "Don't Miss You at All," proves she's a true Blue Note artist with unlimited potential. --Eugene Holley Jr. Really sweet and pleasant She is great and sweet. I still like the first CD better than the second. However, this last CD has new rhytms and tones I like. I do recommend it. It is very relaxing and pleasant to listen. The most talented girl, Norah Jones. Best Choice! I really love her voice. She has something unique that gives me goose bumps. Almost all of the songs in this album are just fantastic.
This album is just as good as "Come Away with Me". Superb!
All you need to do is dim your light, enjoy your glass of wine, and listen to Norah Jones. A combination of Jazz and Country, you won't be disappointed.
Well Done! The phrasing on his standed hits is rushed and choppy. Not the easy flow that I have liked for so long. The CD "John Denver's Greatest Hits" is much better. Devine A great addition to anyones collection. This is a great mix of Denver from the begining and the middle of his carrier. Disk two I wasn't real impressed with, but the first disk is will worth it. It is also nice to have the second one for all four of the unrealsed songs. The "Country Boy" does good. In this cynical era of chattering moon-bats, it's nice to know that we can still snuggle in the warm vibes of John Denver. Knowing that he wasn't designed to be some poseur, or a pretty-boy, he simply let the music speak for itself. And we, the listening public, have reaped the rewards. John Denver was not another sycophantic brooder who blindly catered to the doomesayers lurking around every corner, and we, his legions of fans, delight in singing with him about those "country roads" that will inevitably lead us all to the utopia he predicted. On your feet for the bowl-cutted boy wonder.

Bob Seger - Greatest Hits
Bob Seger - Greatest Hits
Bob Seger - Greatest Hits Artist: Bob Seger (Usually ships in 24 hours) Click Here for more information Bob Seger has racked up a lot of worthy tracks over the years, but it took until 1994 for a greatest hits package to appear. Voil. The bad news: We're missing an awful lot of songs here. Night Moves is Seger's crit-pick album, and a great place to start if you don't have any Seger at all. Next in the rankings is Stranger in Town. Otherwise, his highs are pretty scattered, which would make any best-of package a worthy investment. But if you want to get comprehensive, "Rock Roll Never Forgets," "Fire Down Below," "Horizontal Bop," "Her Strut," "Betty Lou's Getting Out Tonight," and "Katmandu" aren't on this CD--and you'll have to go to the original albums to secure them. --Gavin McNett Seger Is Solid....Like A Rock There are some artists you like and are aware of for quite some time, but only the basic stuff and what you may hear in passing on the radio or wherever. Then maybe you pick up a greatest hits album or studio album of theirs somewhere and start to like more of their stuff that you may or may not of known of and start to see more of what this person has to offer. I love little discoveries like this. At the same time, you might also take their past hits you know and give them more appreciation. Bob Seger is one of those kinds of artists for me. I have always known the basics of his catalogue and have liked every single one of them. But I never thought beyond a song I might hear on the radio and so on. I picked up his second GH at the library and loved it. Got it a second time. Loved it even more. Now I have picked up his first greatest hits. As a causual fan, I really can't complain with the packaging or the track list. Most of what people know from Seger is on here(well known Seger songs such as "Shakedown" and "Beautiful Loser" are on GH 2). This disc is basically a refrsher course for the Seger fans who are not quite yet afficiondos. And really, this is a great disc all on it's own for what it is. I am not concerned with what is or isn't on here. A lot of essential great stuff is on GH 2. Maybe there will be a third one somewhere down the line, since these hits things appear to be the only thing Bob does anymore. 10 of the 14 songs here were chart hits for Bob(and not 9 as stated above in another review). I am not sure why this disc would start off with the track "Roll Away"(peaking at #27), when it is hardly a Seger chestnut. But you get a great menu of classic tunes. "Night Moves"(#4) is here, as well as "Mainstreet"(#24), and the hits keep coming. "Still The Same"(#4), "Hollywood Nights"(#12), "We've Got Tonite"(#13), the great "Old Time Rock And Roll"(#28, which is surprising), which is the most requested jukebos song behind Patsy Cline's "Crazy". You'll also get "Against The Wind"(#5), "You'll Accomp'ny Me"(#14), and "Like A Rock"(#12). Two new songs were recorded for the disc. A cover of Chuck Berry's "C'est La Vie", and a new tune, "In Your Time", which must of been a hit on radio since I remember hearing this song. The Seger classic "Turn The Page" is here, but it was never actually a top 40 hit. It doesn't matter. It's a hit to everybody. And there is "The Fire Inside", which didn't even chart, which is too bad because it's a good Seger tune. I always felt that Seger was never given the kind of attention or credit he deserves. He's a masterful rock roller and writer, and has had nice success over the years, but he always seems to get looked over in favor of other blue collar type rockers like Springsteen. I think you can hear Springsteen, and other artists like The Eagles and Creedence/Fogerty in a lot of his music. So, this disc may not be wet the appetite of his most hardcore fans, and putting the 2 GH cd's together might not do the trick either, but this is a great starting point. If you put the two GH's together, you get 30 worthy songs from a wonderful artist. Bob Seger Rules This is a must for all seger fans. This falls behind Live Bullet, but as a non-live cd , it is packed with hits. bob seger one of the best singers of all time well what can i say its bob seger and bob seger shows the true spirit of rock with songs like turn the page, old time rock and roll, like a rock, hollywood nights and my favorite against the wind now let me just say this its not only a great rock song but its probably one the best songs out of any genre of music ever recorded i will say this much if you don't like against the wind then u just dont like music period. bob seger is one of those landmark artists that everyone needs at least one of his albums in their collection and i say if your only going to get one than make it the greatest hits and then if you still want more get against the wind and work your through more. and if you like seger than will love tom petty, don henely, the eagles, aerosmith, and stuff like that. thanks for reading my review long live rock!!!
